Ernest Gary Gygax: 27th July 1938-4th March 2008
Needless to say, Mortals, I write to you on probably the saddest day in the lives of all of us who have ever dreamed of going off on a noble Quest. Gary Gygax, founder of the Multiverse known as Dungeons & Dragons, has died at his Lake Geneva, Wisconsin home, at the age of 69.
Though your Dragonmaster never knew Gary personally, I have no doubt that I, too, was inspired, as I'm sure so many of you were, by the glorious concept of carrying out unexpected adventures in a series of fictional Kingdoms through the aid of several complicated rules. There are many for whom D&D was, is, and ever shall be, the quintessential nerd pastime. Doubtless some of my fellow Champions of the Imagination --- notably, my Brother Mages Merdwin the Mediocre, Alkatar the Green,and Ryleh the Wanderer --- and my colleagues King Henry the Red of Shiabruck, Queen Anastasia of Hightower, and Lord Clisto Seversword --- were influenced by Gary's unique thirst for dreaming, his incredible sense of wisdom and honor, and his constant ability to take a story and turn it into an adventure for the child dwelling within each and every one of us.
I cannot pay this man enough tribute without acknowledging all of my many friends, both within and beyond the Renaissance Faire, Role-playing, and Sci-Fi/Fantasy Communities who themselves were inspired by this wonderful man. See you the legacy which he has left us: World of WarCraft. EverQuest. BattleTech. The Kingdoms of the SCA. The Kingdoms of the Adrian Empire. The Kingdoms of Amtgard. The Kingdom of Acre. And most recently, our new friends in the lands of Darkon. All of them owe an enormous debt to the dream conceived a mere 44 years ago in the mind's eye of this glorious Dragon named Ernest Gary Gygax. Needless to say, your Dragonmaster joins the worlds of Fantasy and Imagination in expressing heartfelt condolences to Gail, his wife, and their six children.
Fare ye well, O noble Dragon. We who call ourselves Champions of the Imagination will never forget the joy you have brought unto each and every one of us!
