The Diary of Magecraft, Missive #300: For Our Younger Visitors
Happy Valentine's Day, Mortals! So here we are at last --- Missive #300 here in this, my Diary of Magecraft! Huzzah! and hurrah! We'll get to the ego trip thing in just a moment, but there are a few things, some humble words of Wizardly wisdom that I intend to share with my fans who happen to be, as Pat Boone once titled his classic book, Twixt 12 & 20. Listen up, dear goodlies, as these words are as much for your benefit as they are for everyone who visits here, or dares to call him and/or herself a fan of yours truly:
I've had a good many adventures both in and out of cyberspace, and my personal appearances have confused some and enchanted and/or inspired others (and obviously, I have every word of praise for those of you falling under the latter category), but there are a few things you must learn if you are to embrace the future. Here they are:
First and foremost, America is at war. Our enemies are a network of fanatical zealots determined to humiliate not just every American, but the entire world as well. As the saga of 9/11 continues to remind us, these villains will stop at nothing to achieve total domination of all civilization. So someone has to stop them. We, the Good Guys --- whose number, thank goodness, includes yours truly --- must find newer and better ways to do so. Having said that, know, if thou wouldst, that in my 4800-plus years as an expert in observing the future, there's only one thing that matters ultimately: our children and their descendants.
It's to them that we'll be leaving our world, and I think that you, our younger visitors, need to know what lies ahead for all of you. You'll be expected to make decisions which you don't always think you want to make. Choose your methodologies wisely. You'll confront the constant, savage fear of that which you Mortals call peer pressure. Battle it at will. Make your own choices --- remembering, of course, that you must always be true to yourself. And never base your decisions on the opinions and ideas of others. You've got brains, by Merlin's beard! You'd do well to get off your asses and use them!
And ultimately, build --- and, if need be, find --- your strength based upon the tenets of love and hope. Otherwise, we won't know what the future will hold for our children and theirs.
Now, as promised, the ego trip thing. I've been New York's Unofficial Wizard for quite some time now, and ye Byg Appyl continues to both surprise and frustrate me. Nonetheless, this foolish old goat of a Mage is still here, determined at all costs to give his all for his beloved adopted metropolis 24/7/365. Indeed, I recall that I once grumbled: "We're stuck with one another, New York. Get used to it." To those of you who have, I offer you my sincere and humble thanks; as for the rest of you, I can only say: THE BEST IS YET TO COME! AS EVER, STAY YE TUN'D!
Fearlessly yours, as always,
Master Blackwolf
