Super Bowl XLIV: The Last Sane Saturday
I can only begin to count on my fingers the many times that I have reflected on the peace surrounding the last 24 or so hours of sanity before the Super Bowl. When I was writing my Site of the Issue column for the Fellowship of the Black Spot's Ink Blot Newsletter, I described Super Bowl Sunday as "a day so powerful even the gods pause to watch these two teams of Knights jousting for the right to claim supremacy in this entity called the National Football League...." This time, the Knights in question are the Indianapolis Colts and the New Orleans Saints. The latter team, the familiar lovable losers in the NFL, are in the League Championship Game for the first time in their franchise's history. Accordingly, they will not be satisfied until they have brought said Championship back to their beloved Big Easy, giving mighty and wise Rex an extra reason to write a pretty long Royal Proclamation come Mardi Gras Day itself!
Which reminds me: I have not looked in the New Orleans Times-Picayune's online archives concerning this year's Mardi Gras Royal Balls! Usually, I keep a firm eye on the new batch of Kings and Queens of Mardi Gras; clearly, I have not done this!
I remain bugged, however, by the very fact that the damn game is on CBS Sports; I have ranted in my Facebook page concerning "Jim Nantz nightmares." You'll need to have a pretty good understanding of the mechanics of CBS Sports to figure out why that's so.
Nonetheless, I shall, as ever, keep an eye on the Rex Parade on February 16th; besides, I remain hopelessly devoted to Rex --- and, yeah, I hope he's got a Facebook page, too.
